Where do we stand in our road towards our in-cheek delivery of therapies? This week, the BUCCAL-PEP consortium gathered at the University of Aveiro, to discuss the progress of developing the BUCCAL-PEP film.
Hosted by our partner University of Aveiro, the meeting started with a lab tour around the facilities of the CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials. CICECO is an institute in the field of materials science and engineering, joining forces between the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Materials and Ceramic Engineering, along with the School of Design, Management and Production Technologies Northern Aveiro from the University of Aveiro.

In the last few months, the project has made great progress. Prof. David Brayden, coordinator of the BUCCAL-PEP project, commented: “The project is progressing very well with several film prototypes getting ready to be tested in preclinical studies, for their capacity to deliver a GLP-1 analogue to the blood. We have proof of principle that the selected permeation enhancer can deliver the analogue to the blood when presented to oromucosal surfaces in preclinical models. All partners are achieving the deliverables and we are excited about what can potentially be achieved in the final 20 months of the project.”
